16 Listen to a sea lion's bark

It is the largest sea cave in the world and for almost 70 years Sea Lion Caves has attracted hundreds of thousands of people to gaze at the sea lions and rare birds.

Discovered in 1880, the cave is considered the largest sea cave in the world. Visitors may ride an elevator into the cave 208 feet below the surface of the seaside cliffs, but don't just watch the wildlife. The cave itself deserves close attention.

The sea cave is 310 feet long, 165 feet wide and about 50 feet high. The wave-cut passage is 1,315 feet long. The main chamber, where the sea lions congregate, is 0.989 acres, and the total cave floor area is 1.805 acres. A river of molten rock from erupting volcanoes formed the cave about 25 million years ago. Two fractures developed on the north and south ends of the rock and became connected. Ocean action loosened and washed away rock, creating the cave.

Sea Lion Caves is open year-round and is located 11 miles north of Florence. More information about the Sea Lion Caves can be obtained on the internet at http://www.sealioncaves.com or by calling (541) 547-3111.
