42 Take a look underwater

Scuba dive in deep blue water along Port Orford and Cape Arago's reefs. As most dive sites are off shore, most scuba diving will require a boat. Some dive sites are as close as a half-mile or so from shore, while others are nearly 9 miles out at sea. Once under the water and near the reefs, divers will see a variety of aquatic life.

To rent or charter a boat, divers can start at with Five Star Charters in Gold Beach, about 20 miles south of Port Orford. Although the company focuses primarily on fishing excursions, one of the captains is a scuba diver and the company is open to taking diving reservations. For more information, those interested can call (541) 247-0217.

For tanks, equipment, lessons and extra odds and ends, divers can visit any of these scuba or sport shops on the South Coast. There's Coos Scuba, 888-5888, in Coos Bay; and Sunset Sports, 756-3483, in North Bend.
