48 See a giant tree

Take a scenic drive in the country and check out the old-growth Douglas fir and other towering giant trees.

The Doerner Fir, a national champion tree, stands 329 feet tall, with a diameter of 11.5 feet, a crown cover of 60 feet and an estimated gross volume of 52,340 board feet. It's been said that, if harvested, there would be enough lumber from the tree to build five homes. It's not the only spectacular tree on this excursion. Visitors should pack a lunch and plan to make a day of it.

From Coos Bay, travel south on U.S. Highway 101, turning onto state Highway 42. Take the first left at Coquille, just across the road from the Roseburg Forest Products log ponds. Turn left onto the Fairview-Coquille road. Turn right onto Coos Bay Wagon Road and proceed 3.9 miles to the Middle Creek access road. Turn left and drive 13.6 miles to a four-way intersection. Turn right onto Burnt Mountain-Middle Creek Tie road and drive 4.8 miles to the Burnt Mountain access road. Turn left and drive approximately 4.9 miles to East Fork Brummit Creek Road. Drive about 4.6 miles over gravel to the well-marked trailhead.
