6 Walk a beach

Walk a beach A quiet walk on the beach can't be beat in the early morning and late evening. Below the Umpqua River Lighthouse at Winchester Bay, there are miles of nearly deserted beach. Because people are scarce, it's a great place to play with the dogs. There is a great platform to watch the sunsets at the second parking area on the beach side. For those who want to escape those summer winds that coax the mighty Pacific Ocean's rich upwellings, it's best to head out in the early morning and just before sunset.

Or, take a drive out into the Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area off the TransPacific Parkway north of North Bend. Follow the signs to the Horsfall Beach parking area. There is a day-use fee, but the beach is rarely crowded and a great place for picnics and kite-flying.

Reminder: If you park and walk at remote beaches and out of the way parking lots at parks, don't leave valuables in your car.
