62 Drive to Charleston

Don't just imagine Charleston as a place to stop at a roadside fish market while passing through on your way to Sunset Bay and Cape Arago State Parks.

Get out and walk.

The Charleston Marina is home to hundreds of boats ” both commercial fishing and recreational vessels. Visitors are welcome to walk the docks and watch fishermen care for their boats and get ready to fish and work on boats while your crab rings catch dinner. Lay on your stomach and peek over dock's edge, and you'll be sure to see some of the marine critters sticking around in the area, too.

The nearby research center, the Oregon Institute of Marine Biology, keeps a display in the marina to teach visitors about the marine environment. There are shops and restaurants, too. And yes, more fish markets.

The U.S. Coast Guard operates a station in Charleston, and frequently staff is available to answer questions and talk about their life-saving duties.
