89 Enjoy gardens at Shore Acres

Enjoy gardens at Shore Acres It's all about roses, waves, local history. No matter the time of year, there's something to see at Shore Acres State Park, outside of Coos Bay. The trail system offers both views of botanical gardens and the Pacific Ocean. The wind too cold to weather watch in? Step into the observatory. Not only does the building offer shelter and a view, the walls are lined with story of Shore Acres' original owners, lumber baron Louis Simpson and his wife, Cassie. The state of Oregon purchased the land in 1942.

The Rose Garden boasts more than 600 bushes, from fragrant tea roses to delicate miniatures. For more flowers, visit the Japanese Garden at the park. This garden includes a pond, where a glimpse of goldfish may be found. The acres of surrounding gardens and gardener's cottage are sure to please, too.

Events during the summer include the Oregon Coast Music Festival's Garden Concert, at 12:30 p.m. on Saturday, July 19. The concert is free.
