Frontiersman Jedediah Smith began a 200-mile trek up the Oregon Coast in 1828, starting from Smith River, Calif., and heading to present-day Gardiner.

Modern-day coast trekkers can learn about Smith in the Reedsport area and stand in his footsteps.

From Reedsport, take U.S. Highway 101 north over the Umpqua River Bridge. A quick turn to the left places visitors in front of a wooden sign commemorating Smith and his party's deadly interaction with the indigenous people in 1828. Walk past that sign to the left and three steps lead to a tall mossy stone with a brass plate. It mentions the Chamberlain family who donated the land, known as Tideways Island Memorial Park. There's more information about Smith and other local history in the Umpqua Discovery Center.
